Hyde Park Art Center 2009 Two-Day Summer Teacher Institute
The Hyde Park Art Center will host a two-day Teacher Institute this summer on July 27th and July 28th! Up to ten teachers will be selected to work with Art Center staff to create curriculum and lesson plans centered around upcoming exhibitions. Teachers will spend time learning about the many resources available through HPAC to schools, students, teachers, and the larger community and provide input into the Art Center's initiatives by brainstorming ways to better connect HPAC exhibitions and school programs. Participating teachers will have priority in signing up for fieldtrip opportunities, will receive CPDU's and also an honorarium for their time. For more information or to apply fo the program, please contact ryang@hydeparkart.org. Applications will be due at the beginnning of June.

Rhythm World: Free Concert
The Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP), the world’s only year-round presenter of American tap dance and contemporary percussive arts, presents Rhythm World, the oldest and most comprehensive festival of American tap in the world. Now in its 19th year of performance and education programs, Rhythm World kicks off with its second annual free performance featuring Chicago’s finest tap repertory companies will perform, including CHRP’s ensemble BAM!, Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, Jus’ LisTeN and Chicago Tap Theatre, as well as last year’s smashing percussion/dance group, Be the Groove.

The Museum of Contemporary Art invites CPS high school teachers of ALL academic disciplines to apply for the MCA’s 2009 Summer Teacher Institute. Immerse yourself in eight days of artist-led discussion, field trips, and hands-on studio projects, using the museum’s galleries, local artist studios, and other creative spaces as your classroom. The two-week institute will examine ideas about the built environment in contemporary society. Teachers will explore how characterizations of space, which transcend the geographical to include the social and political, inform public conversations about identity, ideology, and empowerment. Teacher Institute: Learning Through Museums
Experience the new Modern Wing and discover exciting ways to bring the Art Institute into your classroom in this intensive weeklong program for K–8 teachers. Through activities and discussions, we will explore what is unique about object-based learning in museums, and how to extend this learning into the classroom. Teachers must apply in teams of two, preferably one classroom teacher and one visual art teacher or literacy coach from the same school who are interested in collaborating to integrate art across the curriculum. In this workshop, teachers will be introduced to the Art Institute's many programs and resources, and to basic strategies for using art to teach literacy and language arts. Exploring Green Architecture and Design
Visit the Art Institute of Chicago's new Modern Wing, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, and the Lurie Gardens in Millennium Park in this three-day hands-on workshop! Over the course of three days, participants will visit pavilions designed by star architects, learn how to create your own digital architectural designs, and explore the principles of sustainability through projects such as building a green roof. Creative Correspondence: Finding Student Identity and Expression through Contemporary Art
Join the Smart Museum of Art and artist Deb Sokolow for a free teacher workshop that focuses on integrating contemporary art and writing in the classroom. This workshop will explore the intersections of creative writing and contemporary art through the lens of the H.C. Westermann Study Collection and the Smart Museum's upcoming exhibition Heartland. Participants will spend time in the galleries and with artist Deb Sokolow gathering ideas for the classroom. Free. 5 CPDUs. Light morning refreshments and lunch provided.
